Herbert MP and Townsville Chiefs Bring Christmas Cheer to Sick Kids

This holiday season, the spirit of giving was in full swing as the Federal Member for Herbert and a local rugby league club joined forces for a heartwarming Christmas Toy Drive.

In the fifth year of this initiative, the Townsville Chiefs Rugby League Club, together with Federal MP Phillip Thompson, delivered over $7000 worth of toys to hospitalised children at the Townsville University Hospital.

This year, the Townsville Chiefs contributed $6000 to the toy drive, with local store Totally Toys in Idalia chipping in an additional $1000.

Barrie Emanuel, a Townsville Chiefs player, shared the reason for the annual Christmas initiative.

“At this time of year, having a child in hospital is not the nicest thing for a family, and all we’re trying to do is put a smile on some kids’ faces and make a difference in their lives.”

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson joined the cheer by distributing the gifts among the children in hospital.

“I can only imagine how my own two daughters would feel if they were hospitalised over Christmas, and what a difference it would make to get a surprise Christmas present.

“When we hauled in those toys, the joy and laughter in the ward really showed how much these gifts meant to them,” said Mr. Thompson.

He also highlighted how much this initiative could benefit the parents, as well as the children.

“This is also a great way to offer some relief to their families during what is undoubtedly a challenging time for them.”

The toys, carefully selected to match the ages of the children, were delivered to the Children’s Ward of the Townsville Hospital, bringing a special moment of joy in their difficult circumstances.
