Herbert MP rolls up sleeve to launch Christmas Blood Blitz Campaign

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson today rolled up a sleeve at the Australian Red Cross to launch the nation-wide Christmas Blood Blitz campaign.

Mr Thompson called on the local community to consider joining him in donating blood this summer.

“As someone who was wounded on the battlefield and has had mates who received plasma in the air, I know first-hand how vital blood plasma donations are to saving lives,” said Mr Thompson.

“I’m encouraging everyone in Townsville who can, to consider donating because it is not too late to make a life-saving contribution.”

The Australian Red Cross expressed their appreciation for Mr Thompson’s support.

“We are incredibly grateful for Mr Thompson’s visit and his call to action. We need the community’s help more than ever,” said Red Cross Donor Engagement manager Gwendolyne Camaret.

With Australia’s growing demand for plasma due to an aging population and innovative medical treatments, the need for donations is at an all-time high.

The Christmas Blood Blitz campaign focuses on the urgent need for plasma donations, which have now surpassed blood as the most critical type of donation required across Australia.

Since the state-of-the-art Townsville Donor Centre opened its doors in February, 14 993 plasma donations have been made, contributing to saving 44 979 lives.

Mr Thompson is particularly encouraging locals to use the new facilities at the Townsville Plasma Donor Centre.

“The holidays are a busy time but the need for blood and plasma never stops, and this is the perfect time to consider doing our part to save lives,” he added.
