Phillip Thompson Commits $1m Boost to Townsville’s Community and Sports Organisations
Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson has unveiled a total commitment of $1,035,000 to champion non-profit community and sports organisations across Townsville, reinforcing his support for the clubs that help our city thrive and stay active.
These investments, to be delivered under an elected LNP government, will provide modern facilities and new opportunities to residents of all ages, from young athletes and artists to seniors.
“Whether it’s giving kids a safe place to play sports, supporting our artists, or backing clubs that bring us together, I’m proud to support these volunteer-run projects that do so much for our community”, Mr Thompson said.
Among these commitments, Mr Thompson announced $232,000 to install a new green at the Jubilee Bowls Club, which suffered significant damage from recent floods. The flooding impacted the foundation and surfaces of the greens, halting tournaments and external events.
“After being hit hard by the floods, this $232,000 for the Jubilee Bowls Club will help this vital community hub get back on its feet, so its players can safely enjoy the sport for years to come,” Mr Thompson said.
The funding will replace the club’s damaged number one green, a safety hazard with unplayable sections, restoring a reliable surface for players and preserving the club’s role in hosting junior competitions, social nights, and events like the North Queensland Junior Championships.
Additionally, Mr Thompson outlined a series of investments to boost local sports, arts and community spaces across the region, under an elected LNP government:
- $280,000 for Townsville Rockwheelers Mountain Bike Club: to construct a new toilet and change room block at its Douglas location, providing facilities for the mountain bike club’s 500+ members and growing kids’ and women’s programs.
- $270,000 for Townsville Touch Football: to upgrade lighting across two fields, expanding capacity for women’s leagues and junior training, including night-time games.
- $130,000 for Townsville Western Suburbs Cricket Club: to upgrade the training nets with a modern, safe facility meeting Cricket Australia standards, supporting juniors, seniors and women’s cricket.
- $90,000 for TheatreiNQ: to upgrade their performance space with new lighting equipment, giving young artists a stage to shine and ensuring North Queensland continues to enjoy top-quality theatre.
- $33,000 for Northern Beaches United Soccer Club: to fund new goals and equipment to support the club’s rapid growth in the northern suburbs, including all-girls and senior teams, to keep players of all ages active and connected through soccer.
These pledges build on Mr Thompon’s recent election commitments, including $150,000 to enhance community safety by funding CCTV upgrades at ten volunteer organisations across the city and $2.2 million to boost women’s rugby by upgrading female change rooms at Townsville and District Rugby.
With the election nearing, these investments underscore Mr Thompson’s ongoing mission to support the heart of Townsville’s community – its clubs, sports, and shared spaces – under an elected LNP government.
“These commitments are about championing our volunteer-run community groups and everything they do for Townsville”, Mr Thompson said.
“I’m proud to get behind these projects and invest in our city’s future”, he said.
