Phillip Thompson to establish Australia Singapore Military Training Initiative advisory committee

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson will establish a community committee to ensure Townsville businesses are able to make the most of opportunities arising from the Australia Signapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI).

The Defence Procurement Advisory Committee will work to bring together representatives from Defence, industry and advocacy bodies to discuss opportunities and challenges in relation to defence procurement in the context of works progressing on the ASMTI.

Mr Thompson said it was an important step in ensuring small and medium businesses in the region could collaborate and create as many local jobs as possible during the construction period.

“The ASMTI is one of the biggest projects North Queensland has had he opportunity to take part in – the contract for the Greenvale training area is worth $800 million,” Mr Thompson said.

“If we as a community can work together, share information and work through issues quickly, we’ll be able to make sure that this project sets us up for years to come.”

The Greenvale training facility will deliver an advanced military training area to meet the needs of 14,000 Singapore Armed Forces personnel, while also meeting the future needs of the Australian Defence Force.

The Committee’s first meeting will take place next Friday, with the initial intention to meet quarterly.
