$1.6m for Palm Island road repairs

A seawall will be constructed, and culverts upgraded on Palm Island, after $1.6 million in funding was announced as part of the recovery from last year’s unprecedented monsoon.

Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson said the repairs were made possible under the $242 million exceptional circumstances package under the joint Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

“Palm Island was hit hard by last year’s natural disaster, and it’s made life that little bit more difficult,” Mr Thompson said.

“We’re committed to ensuring good-quality infrastructure is available for the community to support jobs and grow the local economy.”

The projects funded on Palm Island are:

  • Upgrade culverts and install pavement along Wallaby Point Road, $822,000
  • Construct a seawall to protect Banfield Drive, $790,000

I’m pleased to see funding for these major projects and am looking forward to seeing how they improve life on Palm Island,” Mr Thompson said.

“We aren’t just replacing damaged infrastructure, we’re making it better, to help us weather future storms.”

The projects are some of 15 infrastructure resilience projects announced today. Delivery of these projects will be progressively rolled out until June 2021.
