Bright Future for Townsville Tennis after Lighting Upgrade

Players at Townsville Tennis are already seeing an improvement to their game after an LED lighting upgrade at their courts in North Ward.

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson said he was pleased to be able to secure a grant of $12,000 for the upgrade, which will also help the club save on its power bills.

“These new lights aren’t just brighter, they’re cheaper to run, which is a win-win for everyone involved and allows the club to keep its costs down for its members,” Mr Thompson said.

“Not only that, players will be able to play well into the evening which is crucial given our hot weather during most of the year in Townsville.

“Townsville Tennis does a great job at promoting the game and a fit, healthy lifestyle, so I was really glad to be able to help secure this funding for the club and local tennis players.”

Coach Dan Swords said the lighting had made a big difference for his clients.

“It’s much more efficient. It goes on straightaway, if you turn it off, you can turn it back on. It’s energy efficient as well as cost efficient so we save money on the bill,” he said.

“The vision is much better, the players have no more excuses now, they can’t blame the lights. It’s easy to see the ball, easier to track the ball.”

Six Townsville community groups have shared in more than $51,000 of funding to help cut down on their energy use and save money on electricity bills as part of the Powering Communities Program.
