Volunteer Grants to Ease Cost Pressures for Community Organisations

Herbert MP Phillip Thompson is urging Townsville community organisations to express their interest in grants to help their volunteers.

Mr Thompson said his office was currently taking expressions of interest for grants of between $1,000 and $5,000.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of our community and this funding is about supporting them to do the important work they do,” he said.

“Unfortunately the cost pressures locals are facing at the moment are making it hard for some people to continue the volunteer work they do. Meanwhile organisations are struggling with higher bills and general running costs.

“These grants can be put towards training for volunteers, small equipment to help them do their work, or reimbursement of their fuel costs.”

Local community radio station Triple T was successful in obtaining a grant under a previous funding round, which went towards studio upgrades.

Station Manager Tee Johnson said the project went a long way in helping their volunteer presenters.

“We had studio equipment that was 18 years old, the mixers and parts had become obsolete and the manufacturers of the mixers were no longer available,” he said.

“That funding went towards all the components that go with upgrading a studio – not just the mixers, but microphones, comms – which is all used by the 81 volunteers that we have here at Triple T.”

Further information and an online expression of interest can be found at https://www.philthompson.com.au/volunteer-grants-2022/. EOIs must be received by 5pm Friday 16 September 2022.
