Statement: Merry Christmas

25 December 2023

2023 has been a year of uncertainties, and a very difficult one for many.

In the highlight reel, Townsville welcomed the continued progression of many projects and became the choice destination for many new citizens. Investment in our region continued to prosper as we became home to small businesses and sole traders as well as superstores and luxury hotels.

In defence came the announcement that Townsville will become the Army capital of Australia and be the home of our armoured combat brigade, bolstering and strengthening our national defence capability.

For many in our community, this time won’t be so easy. So, let’s ensure we support one another. Facetime a friend. Remember, it’s OK not to be OK.

If you find yourself feeling the pinch, isolated or doing it tough, please know you are not alone, and I encourage you to reach out to local support services who are here to lend a hand.

We have seen a spike in the cost-of-living and crime crises that has gripped our community, making it harder for some to slow down and take a well-deserved break this holiday season

You are not alone. Let’s take hold of the hope that Christmas offers and be open to next year’s opportunities.

Over this Christmas period, whether you are spending some time at home or travelling away, please stay safe and well. This Christmas I’ll be spending quality time with my beautiful wife Jenna and our two daughters, Astin and Emery.

To those working through Christmas – healthcare, emergency services, retail, logistics, and so many more – thank you on behalf of our grateful community.

To our Defence family who may also be making sacrifices this season – thank you on behalf of a grateful nation.

To everyone across Townsville – from my family to yours, Merry Christmas, and God bless.
