Extended support has been announced for those battling the devastating impacts of coronavirus, providing better and safer access to the doctor, mental health services, help for people suffering domestic violence and those front-line organisations supporting our most vulnerable with basic needs.

This information is current as at 9am AEST Monday 30th March 2020. Visit australia.gov.au for more detail and the latest information.

Medicare telehealth support at home

You will soon be able to have a consult with your GP over the phone or via video call. This will allow you to limit your exposure in the community, while getting the medical assistance you need. The GP bulk billing incentive will also be doubled and a new incentive added to help GPs stay open for those appointments where face-to-face contact is essential.

Domestic violence support

Extra time at home can put pressure on relationships already under strain. Programs under the National Plan to reduce Violence against Women and their Children will be boosted, including 1800RESPECT, the national domestic, family and sexual violence counselling service, as well as programs to support women and children experiencing domestic violence to protect themselves to stay in their homes.

Mental health support

The Government’s digital mental health portal, Head to Health (headtohealth.gov.au) will be a single source of information on how to maintain good mental health during this tough time. A dedicated coronavirus wellbeing support line will also be set up through Beyond Blue. Also, health workers on the frontline will get dedicated mental health support.

Relief services for vulnerable Australians

Older Australians are being advised to stay home as much as possible. This creates extra demand for services that provide the basics like enough food to get by. Funding for these charities and community organisations has been boosted, so the most vulnerable members of our community receive the support they need. There will also be expanded access to the No Interest Loan Scheme providing low-risk financial relief.
