$66,000 for local community organisations to plant lasting legacy

Seven Townsville organisations will share in more than $66,000 to hold tree-planting activities in recognition of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A number of schools and sporting clubs have been successful in receiving the funding as part of the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee program.

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson said money would help each organisation fund a tree-planting event, plaque and trees to beautify their grounds, add shade and mark Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

“It’s great to be able to recognise the Queen’s Jubilee with projects that will leave a lasting impact for these local organisations,” Mr Thompson said.

“These schools and sporting clubs are such an important part of our community, and to be able to provide funding for projects that will make their facilities more attractive and add much-needed shelter from the sun is fantastic.”

Garbutt State School received $8,636 and began their project on Tuesday, in conjunction with their 90th Birthday Celebrations.

The trees will be planted in their cultural garden within the school yard, with the long-term outcome of helping students connect with their community and culture.

Meanwhile Townsville District Bowhunters will hold a Queen’s Jubilee Invitational Archery competition as part of their tree-planting event.

Local organisations receiving funding include:

  • Townsville Central State School – $9750
  • Hermit Park State School P&C Assn – $9750
  • Saints Eagles Souths Football Club Inc – $5000
  • Garbutt State School – $8636
  • The Willows Primary P&C Association – $4000
  • Townsville District Bowhunters Incorporated – $20,000
  • St Anthony’s Catholic College – $9750
