Contract awarded to construct new health centre in Townsville

Australian Defence Force members and the local community will benefit from construction of a new Health Centre at RAAF Base Townsville, with work to begin within weeks.

Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Melissa Price MP, and Federal Member for Herbert, Mr Phillip Thompson OAM MP, announced St Hillier’s Property Pty Ltd had secured the $10.8 million contract with Defence.

The new Health Centre is part of a $212.5 million investment by the Morrison Government in defence health facilities around Australia.

“The construction of the new health care facility will ensure the Australian Defence Force is able to provide quality health services for its personnel,” Minister Price said.

“The facility will include primary care including mental health and rehabilitation, inpatient unit, pharmacy, physiotherapy, dental, general support, external works, airfield response and deployable health accommodation for No. 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron.”

Mr Thompson said the Government’s defence procurement policies are supporting local businesses in achieving a greater share of Defence work.

“Under our Defence Policy for Local Industry Participation, St Hillier’s are required to maximise opportunities for local businesses to supply goods and services for Defence works,” Mr Thompson said.

“I’m pleased this important upgrade to facilities at RAAF Base Townsville will not only benefit the ADF members, but also the local businesses involved.”

Construction of the new health care facilities at RAAF Base Townsville is scheduled to commence in late 2019 with completion anticipated by late 2020.
