Early intervention CBD youth precinct marks major milestone

Townsville CBD workers and residents may have noticed some changes to the landscape around the corner of Walker and Blackwood Streets this week.

Work is beginning to install large poles as part of the adventure-based learning high ropes course at YWAM’s new Youth Precinct which is currently under construction.

Herbert MP Phillip Thompson said it was an exciting milestone on a project which would help to address some of the city’s youth crime, youth disengagement and youth suicide issues.

“It’s great to see work starting on YWAM’s Youth Precinct – it’s such a fantastic project which is why we fought so hard for nearly $800,000 in federal funding to see it come to fruition,” Mr Thompson said.

“This isn’t just about creating a place where young people can spend time and enjoy themselves, it’s about the wrap-around job readiness and early intervention services that will also be provided by the YWAM team.

“Having that early intervention coming alongside young people at a critical age is so important in helping us avoid some of those issues that contribute to the youth crime crisis in Townsville.”

The facility will be used to offer vocational training and skills for job readiness, as well as partner with key stakeholders to assist with preventative, intervention and rehabilitation programs for youth.

The project received $778,500 under the Building Better Regions Fund. More information can be found here.
