Finishing touches on Townsville Airport security upgrades

Locals and visitors to Townsville are benefiting from enhanced security measures at the city’s airport, with works almost completed thanks to Federal Government funding.

Federal Herbert MP Phillip Thompson said the security screening area had been tripled in size and check-in area upgraded as part of the $14.11 million project funded under Federal Government programs.

“Our priority is always to keep Australians safe and secure and we’re continually updating and enhancing our requirements when it comes to aviation security,” Mr Thompson said.

“That’s why it was important we provide the funding to purchase new CT scanners and upgraded screening equipment for Townsville Airport, to ensure locals and visitors to our region are as safe as possible.

“We can never be complacent when it comes to the ever-present threats that we face not just here but across the country, so it’s been fantastic to be able to partner with Townsville Airport on this project.”

Townsville Airport General Manager Brendan Cook said a series of projects had been undertaken in the terminal, which had transformed the space – including significant works funded by the Federal Government.

“We are extremely pleased with the modern and fresh design and improved efficiency of security screening and check in,” he said.

“The security screening area is now 300 per cent larger and includes the latest in airport security screening technology, with two body scanners and CT x-ray systems for carry-on baggage.”

Mr Cook said the latest improvement to the terminal had been unveiled last week when Maggie’s Café had opened, and passengers were welcomed in.

“Maggie’s is a fantastic addition to our terminal food and beverage offering,” he said.

Mr Cook said a new airside retail and dining area would open later this year and further improvements to the terminal were being planned.

In total, $9.15 million was provided for the infrastructure works and $4.96 million for the purchase of security equipment.

The works are expected to be completed in April.
