Last chance to register for JobKeeper Telephone Town Hall with Assistant Treasurer

Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson is urging the Townsville business community to register for a massive telephone hook-up with one of the key Government decision makers regarding the JobKeeper payment.

Mr Thompson has invited Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar to answer questions about JobKeeper and discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on local businesses as part of a Telephone Town Hall this coming Monday the 18th of May at 5:30pm.

Mr Thompson said it was an unmissable opportunity to speak directly with one of the ministers responsible for the $1500 per fortnight per employee wage subsidy.

“The overwhelming feedback from locals has been that JobKeeper has been an absolute saviour through these extremely tough and testing times. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been questions about the application and payment process,” Mr Thompson said.

“That’s why I wanted to give people the chance to ask questions of the minister, get help navigating the process and ensure their business and its employees are getting the assistance required to weather the storm.

“Minister Sukkar is responsible for the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) which has been administering the scheme so is best placed to clarify any issues people may be having.”

Mr Thompson said he admired Townsville’s resilient business community for working together to achieve a number of important improvements to the scheme as it was being implemented.

“Together we’ve been able to clarify the alternate turnover tests for businesses which were affected by floods which can now use a month in 2018 as a comparison period, rather than 2019,” he said.

“We were also able to ensure an extension to the cut-off date for the payment of JobKeeper to employees to help businesses manage their cash flow.

Participants in the Telephone Town Hall can choose to ask a question or simply listen in. They will need to register at https://www.philthompson.com.au/teletownhall/ and be ready to answer their nominated phone number at 5:30pm on Monday the 18th of May.

Registrations close at midnight tomorrow, Thursday the 14th of May. More information is available on the website or by phoning 07 4725 2066.
