Phillip Thompson calls on locals to get out and celebrate on Australia Day

Herbert MP Phillip Thompson is calling on locals to get out and celebrate Australia Day this coming Tuesday, with the Federal Government pitching in up to $1 million to help local celebrations meet COVID-safe requirements.

The COVIDSafe Australia Day Grant, administered through the National Australia Day Council, has provided support for the Northern Stories program of events including the HALO light show, the annual Flag Raising Ceremony and the Free Aussie Breakfast.

Mr Thompson said he hoped locals would make the most of the public holiday and take the opportunity to attend one of the many events.

“We have so many good things to be thankful for as Australians. It doesn’t matter your background, Australia Day is a chance for us all to reflect, respect and celebrate what makes our country great,” Mr Thompson said.

“It’s great that despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve been able to support these important events which unite us and bring our community together.

“So if you’ve got the day off work, get down to Jezzine Barracks and have a free brekky, enjoy the 21-gun salute and Air Force flypast, and check out the amazing light display at Queens Gardens.”

The full program of events includes the Aussie Fun Run, Free Aussie Breakfast, and Australia Day Awards, Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremonies.
