Phillip Thompson MP pledges $2.2 million to champion female Rugby Union in Townsville

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson has unveiled a $2.2 million election pledge to fund the construction of modern, inclusive facilities at Townsville Rugby Union’s flagship centre on Hugh Street, with a focus on boosting female participation in the sport across North Queensland.

The commitment, part of the Coalition’s vision if re-elected, will accommodate the region’s growing number of female rugby players by reconfiguring the ground floor to construct inclusive amenities and changerooms.

Mr Thompson highlighted the critical role this upgrade will play in supporting female athletes, particularly the 300 junior girls and 200 senior women who regularly play at Townsville and District Rugby Union (TDRU), the largest female Rugby Union participation base in regional Queensland.

“For too long, female rugby players in Townsville have had to get changed in the car or behind the tree. This $2.2 million investment will change that, creating a safe space where women and girls can get ready before they run on the pitch,” Mr Thompson said.

The project includes the demolition of the existing outdated facilities, bar and changeroom areas and the construction of modern and inclusive amenities, with private showers and toilets, to cater to the booming participation in women’s and girls’ rugby.

“Female participation in sport is about building confidence and showing young girls they belong on the field. This upgrade will ensure Townsville remains a leader in women’s Rugby Union and inspires the next generation,” Mr Thompson said.

The Currajong facility is already a major hub of Rugby Union in North Queensland, hosting over 10,000 junior and 5,000 senior participants from around the region annually. Yet, as female participation has surged, the need for fit-for-purpose changerooms has become urgent.

Beyond female rugby, the upgrade will benefit the broader community, including TDRU’s core competition base of 1,200 junior and 1,000 senior players. The facility will also continue to host events such as school tournaments, women’s referee courses and a new “Girls Can Tackle Anything” program for Under 8s and Under 10s, set to begin this May.

“This is about giving every player, especially our women and girls, the support they deserve”, Mr Thompson said.

“This is Townsville’s chance to lead the way in regional Rugby Union and show Australia what we’re capable of. Let’s get it done.”
