Queensland Government keeps HomeBuilder applicants waiting up to 17 weeks
Herbert MP Phillip Thompson is calling on the State Government to put more resources into processing HomeBuilder grant applications, with some Townsville locals waiting up to 17 weeks to find out whether they have been successful.
The $25,000 grant was meant to boost construction during the economic comeback from COVID-19 while helping people build a home, but the application process has been handled by the states.
Mr Thompson said while Victoria and Queensland were reportedly processing applications within 3-4 weeks, several Townsville locals had contacted him for help after having waited for more than 4 months.
“Once again, Queenslanders are being left behind by the State Labor Government,” he said.
“We’ve seen that our HomeBuilder grant has been extremely successful in helping people build a home to live in, as well as boosting the construction sector and the flow-on effects that come from that. But unless the money can get out the door we won’t be able to realise the benefits.
“This is causing a real headache for both new homeowners waiting weeks to move into their houses that have been ready to go for weeks, but also builders who may be hesitant to sign contracts if the grant hasn’t been approved yet.
“I’m calling on the State Government to pick up their game. Put on the extra staff, the extra resources, whatever it takes to get this money out the door.”
Mr Thompson said the Federal Government had already taken steps to improve the grant process late last year.
“As part of those changes we extended the program out past the original January 1 deadline to March 31 with a reduced amount of $15,000,” he said.
“We also extended the construction commencement deadline out from three months to six months, meaning that a home can start construction as late as six months out from the contract being signed and still be eligible for the grant.
“Only the State Government has control over the Department that is holding up this process and causing anxiety for applicants and builders.”
