Reef HQ to receive $26.9-million Upgrade

Great Barrier Reef tourism and education have received an additional $26.9 million investment over four years with the upgrade of Townsville’s Reef HQ Aquarium announced in the Morrison Government’s 2019-20 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook.

Home to the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium, Reef HQ’s predator tanks and coral reef exhibit will be upgraded along with its turtle hospital and a number of back of house facilities.

“Reef HQ is a National Education Centre and a key regional tourism destination that plays an important role in promoting understanding of the Reef’s beauty and its challenges,” Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said today.

“The Morrison Government is working with scientists to protect the Reef and it is important to help the community understand the fascinating stories behind the many wonderful projects that are taking place.”

Member for Herbert, Phillip Thompson, said that the investment in Reef HQ will have a positive economic impact on the Townsville Region.

“Reef HQ is an important tourism destination, attracting well over 100,000 visitors a year,” Mr Thompson said.

“The refurbishment sends a clear signal that we are investing in the future of Townsville and in the Reef itself.”
