Riverway Drive Stage 2 On Road to Nowhere

The future of a major upgrade to Riverway Drive is up in the air, with the Albanese Labor Government confirming the project is under review.

Federal Member for Herbert Phillip Thompson secured 80 per cent of funding for the $95 Million project during the previous term of Parliament, with 20 per cent coming from the State Labor Government.

The Albanese Government has included Riverway Drive Stage Two in an Independent Strategic Review of the Infrastructure Investment Program, which aims to identify projects to cut funding for.

Mr Thompson said it was beyond belief that Federal Labor was putting one of State Labor’s projects in jeopardy.

“This is one of Aaron Harper’s pet projects, but he can’t even get his Labor mates in the Federal Government to cough up the cash for something that’s been budgeted since 2020,” he said.

“We fought hard for this funding while in Government because we knew the benefits not just to easing congestion but improving safety for residents and school children in the Upper Ross.

“It’s an absolute kick in the guts to think that Riverway Drive Stage Two might be axed because State and Federal Labor can’t keep their promises.

“If Aaron Harper had any sway within his own party and was really a voice for our community in Brisbane, then this never would have happened.”

The major works were set to provide safety upgrades on a 3.1 kilometre section between Allambie Lane and Dunlop Street and duplicate a 1.6 kilometre section between Allambie Lane and Hammond Way.

Mr Thompson said the community couldn’t afford further delays for such an important project.

“This review is putting the safety of the people of the Upper Ross on hold,” he said.

“It’s not good enough.”
